A woman in Hanoi lost nearly 3 billion VND after installing a strange application
Following instructions from a person claiming to be a police officer, Ms. T. (from Hanoi) installed a public service application via a link provided by the scammer. Shortly after, nearly 3 billion VND disappeared from her bank account.
On October 20, the Hanoi Police Department reported that the Tay Ho District Police are investigating a case of asset appropriation fraud involving the installation of a fake public service application.
According to authorities, on October 15, Tay Ho District Police received a report from Ms. T. (residing in Tay Ho, Hanoi) stating that she had received a call from someone impersonating a police officer, instructing her to install a public service application.
After following the link provided and installing the application, Ms. T. discovered that nearly 3 billion VND had been withdrawn from her bank account.
Hanoi police warned that scammers often impersonate police officers, calling victims to inform them that their citizen ID has errors in the system or requires data updates. They then demand the victim visit a police station for further procedures.
To expedite the process, the scammer pressures the victim to urgently install a fake public service application provided by them.
Once the victim installs the fraudulent application, their phone is hijacked, allowing the scammer to take control and transfer funds.
To prevent such scams, the Hanoi Police Department urges residents to stay vigilant and never install applications based on instructions from unknown callers.
If individuals encounter suspicious situations, they should promptly report them to the authorities to prevent fraud and take legal action as required.
